Children and Family Events

Fall Festival

FALL FESTIVAL is in October and provides games, food, crafts and fun. The games highlight stories and heroes of the BIBLE. We even had a haunted hall of the seven plagues. We had a pumpkin patch and a place for the children to decorate their own pumpkins. The children enjoy TRUNK or TREATS, giving our congregation members the opportunity to meet the children of the church.

Spring Festival

SPRING FESTIVAL always falls on Palm Sunday. We have our annual Easter Egg Hunt, which was a tremendous success with over 300 people attending. We hope to have a magician this year for our program along with activities for the children that correlate with the coming Holy Week. We have the gospel train and lots of bouncy equipment to allow children to have a fun afternoon. We had butterflies to watch, as they began to leave their chrysalis. The children also received books that explained the coming Holy week and the meaning of Easter.

Parenting Workshop

This church year we offered a parenting workshop for parents of young children. The focus was on Christian parenting and how to raise unselfish children in a very self absorbed world. We revisited many issues that were discussed in the previous parent workshops. We are planning several workshops in 2012 and will continue to implement a parent support group that meets all through the year. Each session will deal with parenting issues but with a Christian family focus. The next two workshops are on Feb 16th “ Children and Anxiety” and Bullying- What Can A Parent Do?” They will be taught by Tara Mitchell and Tricia Givens. Later in March there will be a workshop for Jr. High and Senior High parents and students enlightening them of the drug and alcohol dangers and the pressures today’s students are challenged with. This workshop will be taught by Dr. Tommy Barber.

Summer Storytime

This summer our church offered the children in our community a summer reading program. We invited children to come to our church library on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM for a story hour. We had visitors come to talk to the children at some sessions about the related topic. At each session, the children heard several stories and of course a bible story too. Some weeks we do activities together, after the reading of a story along with a snack. We have made puppets, decorated donuts, make snowmen in the summer and have played short games. At each session a bible story was shared also, as well as a hand out that shares the message of God’s love. We plan to continue this program this summer. Our goal is to reach out to the children in our community by sharing the joy of reading books and also by sharing God’s message of love.

Fellowship Sunday

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY, FAMILY MINISTRY, ADULT MINISTRY, and YOUTH MINISTRY have been working together to coordinate a program called FELLOWSHIP SUNDAY’S. FELLOWSHIP SUNDAY’S has been a huge hit in our church . First Church has had excellent attendance to the Fellowship Sunday Dinners and programs. We have had plays, presented, mission programs, music programs, programs performed by the children and the youth of the church, and programs of Faith testimonies. We have had hymn sings, picnics and nights of just fun fellowship where we have celebrated being a part of our church family. We had evenings of spiritual enrichment, as we prepared for Christmas and Lent.

This intergenerational night has been one of fun fellowship and spiritual growth. Our hope is that this monthly night of gathering will bring our large church closer together, giving our church family the opportunity to grow together. This year we had the Shiloh Baptist church 35 member Mass choir come and sing for us in October. We had another Gospel group sing in May. We had the youth fix a meal one evening. We had a couple’s night one evening in February. We had speakers from the VA hospital. We had a Christian magician one evening. We had a Christian ventriloquist, who was quite a hit with the kids and families. We have had plays and several programs of interest. We feel the Fellowship Sunday program has been a wonderful success for our church.
