Chronic Illness Support Group

A Chronic Illness Support Group is offered at First United Methodist Church. This support group is open to anyone who may be experiencing a chronic health issue and to individuals who support those who may be dealing with a chronic illness. The group’s goal is to provide a safe and caring environment that will support and provide helpful information to those who may be dealing with various forms of chronic illness in their lives. The group will be facilitated by Dr. Darryl Helems who is the author of Check Your Pride at the Door: Learning to Live with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. If you, or someone you know may be interested in gaining more information about this group, please contact the First United Methodist Church office at 389-5459.

Community Outreach Program (C.O.P.)

Volunteers travel to Trinity UMC in downtown Roanoke monthly to assist with providing a meal for the children who are involved in this program. Volunteers also offer tutoring assistance weekly. During the Christmas season, we provide gifts for these children, as well as children from the West End Center.

Covenant Relationship with Missionary

Provide monetary support for missionaries, both in the United States and abroad.

Family Promise (Interfaith Hospitality Network)

Our church is a supporting congregation that assists another church in providing food, lodging and emotional support for homeless families.

Participate in apple gleaning in the fall and potato gleaning/bagging in the summer.

Habitat For Humanity

Joined together with other United Methodist Churches in the Roanoke District to build a Habitat house.

Hermitage Guild

Home Touch Ministries “Reaching Out to Our Home Bound Members”  – The purpose of this ministry is to specifically target a loving touch to FUMC members who can no longer physically attend our church services.  So we take the church to them with a team of volunteers, by visiting them, praying with them, sharing in Holy Communion, and reading scripture together.

Red Bird Mission

Sponsors a craft show at our church every other year. All proceeds go to Red Bird Mission in Kentucky.

Salem Food Pantry

On the second Sunday of each month, FUMC collects loaves of bread to be given to needy families in the Salem & west Roanoke County areas through the Salem Food Pantry. We join together with other churches in the area that collect bread on other Sundays. The amount of food distributed through the Salem Food Pantry is higher than it has ever been. A recent blip in demand is thought to be where families had to divert food money to pay the fees and costs of their children starting a new school year.

Shoe Fund

Hosts events throughout the year to provide a new pair of shoes to children in Salem & Roanoke who cannot afford them. This program is sponsored by the UMW in conjunction with Walmart. For more information, please email UMWShoeFund@gmail.com.
