The purpose of the Music Ministry at First United Methodist Church is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ through song, encourage believers in their walk with Christ, lead the congregation in worship, and provide an avenue through which individuals may share their gifts and be an integral part of the worship. We currently have four vocal choirs, three handbell choirs, and a praise band. We offer avenues for all ages to share their musical talents and we encourage you to share your gifts by joining one of our choirs or band.

GENESIS Praise Band
Our Genesis Praise band is an integral part of our two Genesis Praise and Worship Services on Sunday mornings at 8:45AM and 10:00AM. From time to time, the band performs at other church functions and/or represents FUMC at functions outside of the church. This music ministry intends to give FUMC attendees an outlet to utilize their musical gifts to serve the church.
The band plays many different genres of music including popular Contemporary Christian songs, traditional hymns with a modern spin, gospel bluegrass/folk favorites, as well as rock music. The band welcomes volunteers to be a part of the band. Vocalists, guitarists, pianists/keyboardists, drummers, and bass players make up the core band; however, we welcome any type of instruments from horns to other string instruments to join in. The ability to read music is not a requirement to be a part of the band. Band members work on a rotating schedule and can typically be scheduled based on their personal availability.
The band typically practices on Tuesday evenings at 7PM and/or on Sunday mornings at 7:30AM prior to the 8:45 service. Allan Davidson and Joey Poarch head up the praise band and are happy to talk with anyone interested in volunteering. Feel free to come talk to them before or after one of the Genesis Worship Services on Sunday morning!
MEET Heather Mitchell
Hi! My name is Heather Mitchell and I am the Coordinator of Music Ministries here at FUMC. I direct the Sanctuary Choir, Youth Choir, Heavenly Bells (children’s handbells), JuBELLation (youth & young adult handbells), and Resounding Joy (adult handbells) choirs. I have been a member of this church my entire life! I have been directing choirs here for 20 years. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a voice concentration and a teaching certificate in Choral directing K-12 from Hollins University. My husband Matt and I have three children: two daughters in college and a son in high school. Although I grew up in Salem, I now live with my husband and children on a farm in Buchanan. I enjoy having the land and space to share with many pets and livestock.
