The purpose of the Music Ministry at First United Methodist Church is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ through song, encourage believers in their walk with Christ, lead the congregation in worship, and provide an avenue through which individuals may share their gifts and be an integral part of the worship. We currently have four vocal choirs, three handbell choirs, and a praise band. We offer avenues for all ages to share their musical talents and we encourage you to share your gifts by joining one of our choirs or band.
Children ages K-2nd grade learn music to share at the various worship services. Choir also provides the opportunity for prayer and sharing God’s word through song.
Children ages 3rd-5th grade learn music to share at the various worship services. Instruction provides a more in depth experience as children will become acquainted with reading music. Choir also provides the opportunity for prayer and sharing God’s word through song.
This choir for adults provides weekly music for the 11:00 a.m. Sanctuary worship service and may present major sacred works throughout the year. The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:00 pm.
This ministry utilizes a newly refurbished (July 2022) 4 ½ -octave set of Schulmerich handbells and 4 octaves of Malmark handchimes. Our rehearsal fellowship will include becoming team players exploring skills that express the diversity of sounds possible with handbells and handchimes for worship.
Ensembles for ringing are inclusive of all ages, as outlined below, with plans for music in both the Genesis and traditional worship services.
Children's Bell Choir
Sundays 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.
This ensemble is open to all elementary ages.
To insure safety, membership may have to be limited for those with very small hands due to the limited number of small bells in this range. Participants below grade 4 may also require a pointer to stand with them as an aid to follow the music. Pointers do not have to be experienced handbell musicians; just have some basic music understanding.
Please contact Debbie Rice in advance if your child has very small hands, might be in need of a pointer, or if you would be willing to join our fun and games as a “pointer”.
Youth Bell Choir
Sundays 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Designed for youth ages in grades 6-12.
Some music reading experience is certainly a bonus, but not a requirement.
Adult Bell Choir
Thursday 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
This intergenerational ensemble for adults is inclusive of college students and experienced youth. Music reading skills preferred.
Rehearsals are Thursday evenings with the flexibility to begin earlier or stay later for an additional 30 minutes.
GENESIS Praise Band
Our Genesis Praise band is an integral part of two Genesis Worship Service on Sunday mornings at 8:45 am. From time to time, the band performs at other church functions and/or represents FUMC at functions outside of the church. This music ministry intends to give FUMC attendees an outlet to utilize their musical gifts to serve the church.
The band plays many different genres of music including popular Contemporary Christian songs, traditional hymns with a modern spin, gospel bluegrass/folk favorites, as well as rock music. The band welcomes volunteers to be a part of the band. Vocalists, guitarists, pianists/keyboardists, drummers, and bass players make up the core band; however, we welcome any type of instruments from horns to other string instruments to join in. The ability to read music is not a requirement to be a part of the band. Band members work on a rotating schedule and can typically be scheduled based on their personal availability.
The band typically practices on Tuesday evenings at 7PM and/or on Sunday mornings at 7:30AM prior to the 8:45 service. Allan Davidson and Joey Poarch head up the praise band and are happy to talk with anyone interested in volunteering. Feel free to come talk to them before or after one of the Genesis Worship Services on Sunday morning!
